Band on the Run
The Darwin High School band had a busy schedule in Week 4, performing at a whole school assembly and the Indonesian Independence Day celebrations.
The 18 piece band is made up of students from Years 10-12 as well as several of our talented teachers. They have a broad repertoire that includes everything from Classical works to Jazz and Movie Themes.
As part of a long standing partnership, the Darwin High School band is invited to play at the annual Indonesian Independence Day celebrations held at the Indonesian Consulate in Darwin. This year’s celebration on 17 August, marked 71 years since the country declared independence from the Netherlands in 1945.
In addition to our band, several of our students studying Indonesian attended, along with Indonesian exchange teacher Ms Nova Marlina.
Students enjoyed experiencing the cultural importance of the event, and the austere nature of the songs they had learned. Students were invited to the celebratory meal after the ceremony. Consulate management were so impressed with the long term sustained support of the Darwin High School Concert Band and Indonesian classes that they bestowed the great cultural honour of presenting the first cut of cake to the group.
