Darwin High School to compete in the 4th International High School Basketball Championship

The Darwin High School Boys Basketball team will fly to Malaysia this Saturday to compete in the 4th International High School Basketball Championship. The tournament will see teams from Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Macau, Taiwan, China and a few other Asian High Schools compete for the championship trophy.

This year the championship includes sixteen boys and six girls’ teams. It’s the first year Darwin High School has sent a team and they are the only school to attend from Australia. The students have been training hard since April and Darwin High School teacher and Coach, Steve McGugan is quietly confident about his team.

I’m unsure of how we will go. Some of our competitors are basketball schools with national Juniors in their teams. We have a few high level players: Max Davies stands out as a member of BNT High performance, Joel Stevens and Malex Laurel have both played League games for the club. Brayden Hateley, Mitchel Miller and Axel Saunders are A grade players in local competition, Daniel Fuller, Noah Borges-Nunes and James Quinn are new to competition basketball but all three are very athletic and improving in their skills at each outing.

As well as taking to the courts, the students have had to prepare for international travel. They have been working on cultural awareness, hygiene and different food habits. Today Principal Trevor Read, awarded them with their Darwin High School team jerseys, thanked them for all their hard work and wished them the best of luck for the tournament.

All of the students are incredibly excited about the journey ahead of them.
