Laing O’Rourke Inspiring STEM+ Program

By teacher Ms Shobie Doraisingam
Our first module for the Inspiring STEM+ program kicked off with a few group activities learning about the concepts of structure, reliability, flexibility, safety, and sustainability in building designs. The tower challenge was a fantastic opportunity to showcase teamwork, creativity and also learn about real world challenges in resources and time constraints.
The highlight for the day was going to the Larrakeyah Defence Base, where we saw actual construction sites and projects in process. This excursion showed the great possibilities that lie in this field. Module one was both educational and fun, encouraging us to pursue professions in the STEM field. I'm looking forward to Module 2!

The Module 1 for Inspiring STEM Girls was very fun, we did so much stuff such as making a tower made from skewers and candy, then we stacked all of them on top of each other and chucked it across the room, we then went out after the girls got us donuts, we went on a bus to the Larakia defense base, where we got hard hats and safety glasses, we explored and we got to see a huge boat. We also visited several parts of the site which may have looked insignificant, but they were, in fact, very significant to the entire operation. We saw Constuction sites and learnt about the different things they do when building. We got to learn about the process of building and engineering and discussed applying these factors to real life, in terms of cost and sustainability. We give this first Module a 10/10 and are excited to start the next one!
