About the subject

In this course, students will increase their understanding of popular culture in contemporary Asian societies and explore the languages and values of Asian cultures through this medium.

This subject focuses on developing skills in inquiry and research. Students will compare cultural values evident in pop culture with their own and explore how pop culture is viewed across generations within Asian and Australian communities. Students will view and create texts using multimedia to demonstrate their understanding.

Students will learn about different forms of pop culture in Asia, including Anime, k-pop, Manga, Kungfu movies, Balinese art, Bollywood and Taiwanese dramas. Students will learn key vocabulary (in the related Asian language) encountered in these and be able to explain the meanings of these in English to others. Students will explore their own connections and responses to the values and ideas commonly presented in Asian pop culture thereby increasing their intercultural competence.
