Legal Studies Excursion to Parliament House

Legal Studies Excursion to Parliament House

This term Darwin High School Stage 1 Legal Studies students are participating in the Step Up, Be Heard program with Parliamentary Education Services. This is a hands-on, interactive experience in the learning of parliamentary processes and how laws are made.

The program includes a series of activities that lead up to a mock parliamentary debate that will take place in Parliament House in the real Chamber with the real Speaker presiding. On Wednesday 14 March the students were given a tour of Parliament House and were permitted to sit in the open galleries to watch parliament in action. They also attended a voting education session with the NT Electoral Commission about voting in Australia and the NT, the three levels of government, types of voting systems and how preferential voting works. The students will return to Parliament House in Week 11 to participate in the mock debate.
