Mathematicians in Schools
As part of our involvement with the Mathematicians in Schools Program students in Stage 1 and 2 Mathematics classes were visited by a ConocoPhillips Engineer, Daly Kelly in Week 8. ConocoPhillips, the world’s largest independent energy exploration and production company. Here’s what students had to say about the experience.
"Daly Kelly encouraged us to think outside the box with several word problems in limited time. All students were able to collaborate in a group to decipher the logic questions, like engineers do daily. This was a fun and interactive experience."
Elizabeth, Stage 1 C4E Mathematics
"Rather than receiving a traditional presentation about engineering as we were accustomed to, we were provided with an assortment of interesting puzzles to test and develop our logic and problem solving skills. We split into groups of two or three and rotated around the four puzzles that he had set out, receiving successively less time for each problem. There was an additional bonus problem that could be attempted if the other puzzles were solved quickly enough.
As a class, we enjoyed the challenge and undertook each task with enthusiasm. It was a valuable learning experience, and provided an insight into working to solve problems efficiently and effectively under time constraints, as is required in a workplace."
