Biology

11BIOS1/11BIOS2

In Biology students study the structure and function of living things, and how they interact with their own and other species and their environments

Course details

  • Further study Stage 2 Biology (2BIOY)

About the subject

They will investigate biological systems from the perspectives of energy, control, structure and function, change, and exchange in microscopic cellular structures and processes, through to macroscopic ecosystem dynamics.

Course content

Students must be able to demonstrate their skills, knowledge and understanding of the three strands of science.

  • science inquiry skills
  • science as a human endeavour
  • science understanding.

Science understanding is delivered under four main topic areas:

  • Topic 1: Cells and microorganisms
  • Topic 2: Infectious disease
  • Topic 3: Multicellular organisms
  • Topic 4: Biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics

Assessment

Students provide evidence of their learning through four assessments each semester.

Assessment Weighting
Science as a Human Endeavour Investigation 25%
Deconstruct and Design Practical 25%
Test 25%
Examination 25%
