Centre for Excellence Mathematics

C4E1MS1/S2

This subject is for students in the Centre for Excellence in Science and Mathematics only.

About the subject

This Centre for Excellence (C4E) subject is designed for a group of high ability students who have a keen passion for learning, aspiring to be potential leaders in the field of science and/or engineering. This subject gives students the abilities and skills required in the workplace and in everyday life. They learn how to approach new challenges by investigating, modelling, reasoning, visualising, and problem-solving with the goal of communicating to others the relationships observed and the problems solved.

Course content

Students in this class cover the same topics as in the standard Stage 1 Mathematical Methods course. However, concepts covered for standard topics are extended to enable students to explore problems involving higher-level thinking.

This program also involves partnerships with Mathematicians in Schools to enable the students to learn the real life applications of mathematics in various industries. Extended assignment tasks where students are allowed to use their innovative ideas, demonstrate and apply their mathematical knowledge and understanding to a range of contexts and problems by providing alternative explanations and proposing solutions, are also provided in this program.

Assessment

Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 1 Mathematics:

  • Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks
  • Assessment Type 2: Mathematical Investigation.

There is also a formative examination which will be used to place students in the appropriate course/s in the next semester.

Students who achieve a C grade or better in this subject meet the NTCET compulsory 10-credit numeracy requirement.
