About the subject

It emphasises defining the problem, problem solving approaches, the generation of solutions and/or concepts and the skills to communicate resolutions.

Students start with the research and exploration of media, techniques and design processes in order to initiate ideas to conceive and develop directions towards resolved design works. Through the process, students communicate knowledge and understanding of their own work. Students are encouraged to identify the connection with other practitioners. Students draw on knowledge of various sources to find examples of designers’ work for inspiration and to communicate their appraisal of various pieces either written or oral forms.

For both 10-credit and 20-credit programs, with a focus on either art or design, the following three areas of study are covered:

  • Visual Thinking
  • Practical Resolution
  • Visual Arts in Context

Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types.

  • Folio
  • Practical
  • Visual Study.
