In Drama the main emphasis is on developing the capabilities for communication, citizenship, personal development, and learning, which are reflected in the learning requirements, the content, the assessment requirements, and the performance standards.

About the subject

Students start by looking at the essentials of Drama in relation to performance: body, voice and focus. Specific theatre practitioners are then studied and their theories are put into practice within a presentation to class. Some theatrical styles students will cover are: Realism, Physical Theatre, Political Theatre and Satire.

The group spends a lot of time creating and rehearsing a major performance. Students can choose what type of role they take on within this, be it performance (acting) or technical (directing, lighting/ sound/ multimedia design, stage management, costume/set design etc). Students review at least one piece of live theatre within a semester.

Students undertake a teaching and learning program based on the following three areas of study:

  • Presentation of Dramatic Works*
  • Dramatic Theory and Practice
  • Investigation and Presentation

*Students are required to rehearse outside of class time for this subject.


Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:

  • Performance (40%)
  • Investigation and Presentation (30%)
  • Folio (30%).
