In this subject students explore how expressions of power affect relationships with others in families, communities, workplaces, and the institutions of finance, bureaucracy, education, the law, and the media.

About the subject

Students discuss political concepts, ideas, and issues, and reflect on the relationship between politics, power, and decision-making. Students develop knowledge, skills, and understandings that enable them to become informed citizens, voters, and participants in their local, national and international communities.

The 10-credit subject consists of a Core Study: Key Issues in Politics and at least one option study.

The Core Study

Key Issues in Politics consists of three topics:

  • Topic 1: Power and Decision-making - students are introduced to the concept of power as a pervasive and/or subtle force in their everyday lives.
  • Topic 2: Community Politics - students are given the opportunity to consider the reasons why decisions can affect them, the individuals and groups who are intimately connected with the making of these decisions and the degree to which they themselves can participate in a decision-making process
  • Topic 3: Government - students become familiar with the two levels of government in Australia.

Assessment

Assessment at Stage 1 is school based. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types: 

  • Folio
  • Sources Analysis
  • Investigation.
