Stage 1 Outdoor Education

Stage 1 subject open to Year 10 students

Outdoor Education challenges students to step outside the classroom and connect with the natural world. Through practical experiences and outdoor journeys, students develop leadership, teamwork and environmental awareness while building confidence, resilience and a sense of adventure.

About the subject

This is a Stage 1 (Year 11) course, which is also available to Year 10 students.

Outdoor Education explores the relationship between people and the natural environment through a range of outdoor experiences. Students develop self-reliance, teamwork and leadership skills while building an appreciation for nature and sustainability.

The subject encourages students to think critically about environmental issues and reflect on their impact on the world around them. It also promotes wellbeing, resilience and personal growth, while introducing pathways into outdoor recreation, environmental studies and education careers.

Course content

Students participate in a range of outdoor activities and experiences that develop practical skills, environmental understanding and social awareness. They explore:

  • Ecology and environmental sustainability
  • Cultural perspectives, including Indigenous Australians’ connection to Country
  • Physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing
  • Leadership, teamwork, and self-management
  • Risk assessment, safety management, and sustainable practices

Outdoor journeys form a key part of the learning experience, helping students build confidence and develop lifelong skills in planning, decision-making, and environmental responsibility.

A 10-credit Stage 1 Outdoor Education course includes the following topics:

  2. Planning and Management
  3. Outdoor Activities
  4. Outdoor Journey Assessment

Assessment

Students demonstrate their learning through:

  • About natural environments: Investigation into conservation and land management
  • Experiences in natural environments: Reflection on practical experiences in the outdoors X 2
