2022 School Survey Summary

2022 School Survey Summary

Thank you to everyone across the community who took the time to complete this year’s School Survey. We saw an increase of 29% in parent participation – a fantastic result!

Your responses tell us where we are doing well and where there might be room for improvement, all of which helps to identify Darwin High School’s annual school improvement priorities and enhance student outcomes. Highlights from this year’s survey include notable growth in the number of parents who agree that they have opportunities to have a say in the direction of the school and it’s programs, consistently positive responses from students and staff regarding teacher expectations and an increase in the number of parents and students who agree we take their opinions seriously.

While these are all big positives for the community, parent feedback indicated that they would like to see an increase in the number of opportunities to engage with the school, whether it be through an annual event or just to strengthen the way they receive updates on their student’s progress. This feedback has been shared with the school board and is something that we will continue to work on in 2023. In the meantime, a great way to get involved in the community is by joining one of the board committees. More information about the current committees and their functions can be found on the Darwin High School website (noting that these may change in 2023).

Other areas for improvement that will be a focus in the 2023 Annual School Improvement Plan include:

  • finding ways to increase student voice and agency in their learning
  • developing a whole school instructional model to strengthen best practice in teaching
  • creating plans for orientation and transition to better support students during their time at DHS and beyond
  • the creation of a whole school professional learning plan.

.

These priorities are supported by staff and student feedback. In particular, staff and students provided feedback around student behaviour and student wellbeing, both of which are part of our focus for improvement in 2023.

Our staff provided some great feedback including requests for:

  • more opportunities to engage with other faculties and participate in social activities and a dedicated outdoor space for staff
  • more informal learning opportunities and improved access to professional development (PD) in general
  • behaviour/wellbeing focused PD
  • facility upgrades including A & B block and the toilets.

Students also provided feedback specific to behaviour management and facility upgrades. In addition they’d also like to see more colour (incl. plants) around the campus, better processes for subject selections and reducing ATAR pressure. All of this feedback aligns closely with our goals for school improvement, noting that during this term we successfully planted approximately 70 trees across campus. In 2023 we will see:

  • the creation of murals across the campus which will incorporate our new values
  • a review and refresh of the subject selection process
  • a focus on ensuring flexible pathways for students that meet their learning needs.

Overall, responses to the survey were positive and it was encouraging to read comments expressing your appreciation of the support and encouragement our staff provide for your students. Other positive points raised by parents and carers included the range of electives and learning opportunities offered by the school, our responsiveness and the educational and wellbeing support we provide.

Thank you again to everyone who took the time to complete the survey and we look forward to seeing you in 2023!
