ANZAC Assembly 2025: A Student-Led Tribute of Reflection and Respect
On Monday 28 April, Darwin High School proudly held its annual ANZAC Assembly in The Tank, providing a meaningful opportunity for our school community to come together in remembrance and reflection on the courage, values, and sacrifices of the ANZACs.
The assembly was hosted by Year 12 students Max Knight and Jolyn Sun, and began with a heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country delivered by Year 11 student Marlon Jauncey. This powerful opening set the tone for a respectful and reflective event.
We were honoured to welcome special guests, including the Honourable Jo Hersey MLA, Laurie Zio MLA, Mr Luke Gosling OAM MP, Department of Education Chief Executive Ms Susan Bowden, Senior Director Lisa Hirschausen, Australian Defence Force representatives, parents, and members of our School Board.
Captain Evert van Der Steeg delivered a moving Commemorative Address that resonated deeply with students and guests alike. William Hewitt from Larrakia Nation provided a powerful didgeridoo accompaniment during the wreath-laying ceremony, honouring tradition and deepening the cultural significance of the occasion.
Musical contributions added a special dimension to the assembly. Year 11 student Reuben Bryett performed the New Zealand National Anthem, Year 12 student Lilly Downs led the Australian National Anthem, and the Darwin High School Band provided a beautiful and respectful musical backdrop throughout the service.
Year 11 student Talan Kemp delivered the Ode of Remembrance, followed by a solemn performance of the Last Post by Year 10 student Peter Harvey.
We also extend our thanks to student cadets Liam Matthews, Hadi Warraich and Jamie Procter, joined by three students from Darwin Middle School, who formed the Ceremonial Guard under the leadership of Year 11 cadet Hamish Samuels.
This was a truly student-led event, with contributions from across the school, creating a moving and meaningful tribute. We are incredibly proud of our students, whose respectful conduct and participation reflected the true spirit of ANZAC commemoration.
Thank you to all staff, students, and special guests who contributed to the success of this important event.
