Basketball Swag
By teacher Steve McGugan
On September 21, Darwin High was honoured by a lunchtime visit from Australian Basketball Legend Cal Bruton – NBL Championship player, NBL Championship Coach, Australian Representative, NBL and Australian Basketball Hall of Fame and Order of Australia recipient. Cal was in Darwin for the NBL Pre-Season Tournament “The Blitz” for which the trophy is also named the Cal Bruton / Leroy Loggins Trophy.
Around 40 students and teacher attended the Tank and were impacted by the messages, skills and drills.
On Tuesday the day prior, Cal said lets the students know my message is “If a short black bald headed guy can do it – you can too! All you have to do is pack your SWAG in your Bag!”
After engaging one and all he stressed the importance of attention and eye contact in receiving messages and then explained what he means by the acronym SWAG.
SKILLS – work on you skills, whatever they are and whatever your interests are. Music, art, sports, science – never stop working on learning and improving
WORK ETHIC – Got to have a strong work ethic to succeed. Plan and do.
ATTITUDE – respect, humility, positivity. Accepting responsibility for own actions and behaviours
GOALS – without goals you have no direction – he shared how he started by never leaving practice till he shoot 10 foul shots, which quickly become 10 in a row which then grow to 100 in a row!
He also stressed the need to be supported by a SPIME cp SPINE . Be:
Socially responsible
Physically Fit
Intelligent decision making
Mentally aware
Emotionally responsible – give care and support for others.
He continually stressed his focus in team sports and emphasised to make the TEAM the DREAM and the DREAM the TEAM.!
Thanks Cal – your messages will continue to flow
