BiG Day In 2024

By Officer Sue
Darwin High School students were excited to discover how BIG Information & Communication Technology has become, even in Darwin when they attended “The BiG Day In” at the Darwin Hilton on Monday 20 May.
Presented by Australian Computer Society (ACS), the event was opened by Hon Mark Monahan MLA, Minster for Education, Minister for Mining & Minister for Agribusiness & Fisheries, Northern Territory Government.
Their first presentation was from Darwin High School alumni Dylan Bennett (The Array) who spoke of the video gaming industry in the Northern Territory. Maxwell Clayton from the Australian Signals Directorate followed (opportunities and pathways with ASD), with further presentation from; Flight Sargeant Scott McKenzie from the Royal Australian Airforce (STEM Careers in Defence), Anna Goat & Luke Fronsko from Rise Project Consulting (3D modelling with flying drones, underwater drones and scanners) and Martin Redhead from Business Innovation, Department of Industry, Tourism & Trade, Northern Territory Government (Inspirational Territorians achieving). And that was just before lunch!
Following a brief lunch break it was time for a Q & A session with a panel session “Why Choose ICT?”. Team members from NEC spoke of their journeys and their decisions to pursue a career in ICT. The last session of the day was from Zephyr Dobson. Darwin born and raised, this young person is a true inspiration, working in various integration projects and launching his own software company “Code Zephyr”, with six small-scale videogames, two of which are in virtual reality. A true inspiration for our young people to give it a go.
