C4E Catapult Challenge

C4E Catapult Challenge

Last week Darwin High Centre for Excellence students took part in a catapult challenge. The students designed and built a catapult using mathematical concepts learnt in class and then tested their catapults to hit a designated target.

By student Patrick Wiltshire

The students of Mrs Tan’s C4E Year 11 Methods class, took part in the testing and comparison of our catapults. The challenge was accuracy and the prize was movie tickets. However, no team managed to achieve the goal of hitting a target and thus no free movie tickets were won. Regardless of this failure, everyone had fun and our knowledge of the effect of the a, b and c variable of the quadratic equations was greatly heightened.

Opportunities like these are always good as they allow us to get out of the class room and apply what we have learnt.
