Careers in Police, St John Ambulance and NT Fire & Rescue Service

By Officer Sue
Darwin High School’s Year 10 PLP Cohort received Career presentations for Police, St John Ambulance and NT Fire & Rescue Services on Monday 3 June from their own Police Officer Sue Seears and guest presenters; John Payne (St John Ambulance Paramedic) and Jessica Grieve (St John Ambulance Emergency Medical Dispatcher) and Senior Fire Fighter Nicolette McCourt and Fire Fighter Dave Small (NT Fire & Rescue Service)
In their PLP Lessons they learnt what selection criteria applied to each emergency service, what their options were to join directly after finishing school or as a mature applicant after some work, life or trade experience. They were surprised to learn that out of the 5 presenters, 3 had joined later in life – after the age of 30! Also discussed were career opportunities for travel, different streams/sections within each emergency service career and the most important thing – how much you are paid and how many weeks recreation leave you are allotted.
Officer Sue thanks all involved, especially guest presenters Nicolette, Dave, John and Jessica for committing a whole day to these lessons at Darwin High School. AND they’re coming back in Term 3!
