Celebrating NAIDOC Week
Last week Darwin High School staff and students celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for our 2024 NAIDOC Week, Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud with a range of activities throughout the week.
This year’s theme chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee, is Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud. The theme honours the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture – with fire a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
On Monday students and staff gathered on the grass area between B Block and the Admin building for a traditional smoking ceremony by Trent Lee from Larrakia Nation and a weaving workshop. Everyone enjoyed a bbq lunch and a performance from local Torres Strait Islander Group. Shout out to Ms Albertoni and her Aboriginal Studies students for organising events and activities on campus for the week.
On Thursday everyone enjoyed participating or spectating a basketball competition in the Tank hosted by local indigenous organisation, Hoops 4 Health. Students were able to enter a team or spectate and the competition finished with a student's v staff match - which ended in a draw! Outside the tank students and staff enjoyed, a sausage sizzle, some more cupcakes and some art activities.
Congratulations to Ms Albertoni's Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies class for organising our 2024 NAIDOC Celebration and a big thanks to all the community organisations, students and staff who contributed to the events success.
