Darwin High Schools Dance department held their ninth annual dance showcase event on Friday 17 May in the Tank.

By teacher Sarah Calver

Over 180 performers performed on stage and celebrated the joy and power of Dance actively shaping creative options for younger generations of Darwin artsists and extending their possibilities beyond the classroom and stage.

Dance19 was supported by many vibrant groups that make up our dance community: Darwin High School Dance students plus the exceptional SLIDE Youth Dance Theatre Company; professional Jordan Bretherton; the fantabulous Pumper Jumpers; Good Shepherd Lutheran College; McKillop Catholic College; Darwin Middle School and our studios of excellence the Darwin School of Ballet, That’s Dancing, The Darwin Performance Academy, Rix Kix Arts, Darwin Creative Dance Industries and Express Studios. Some of these performers stepped out onto the stage for the first time whilst others were avid performers, and although the styles of dance they study might look different, the one commonality they all share is their passion to experience Dance. It was a spellbinding evening of Dance.

I would like to acknowledge our amazing sponsors the Chief Minister Michael Gunner for his generous Pizza donations, the many students and parents who baked up a storm, plus our tireless front of house and backstage volunteers, our car park assistants for their support and Chris Osborne and Bill Surtees for Production. Funds raised go towards the WA Dance Trip and the DHS Dance Program for 2019.

Audience feedback:

In my opinion the showcase for Dance 19 was very well organised and presented. There was a wide variety of different dance styles accompanied by some brilliant lighting which made for a very enjoyable evening. Credit must be given to the choreographers and individuals who helped to make and organise such an enjoyable night.

Coen (ex DHS dancer/graduate)

Thank you so much for putting on such an amazing dance showcase….I felt privileged to be in the audience.

Sally Crawford (Ex- DHS Arts Senior)

The bi-annual DHS showcase event is certainly a spectacular evening filled with multiple performances from not only our DHS students but students from other dance studios, companies and schools. It truly showcases the amazing talent of dancers that we have here in the NT and the power of performing, and our school provides an avenue for this celebration! So, do yourself a favour, next showcase grab some friends and come check it out.
