Sustainability with Stage 1 Geography

Sustainability with Stage 1 Geography

By Geography teacher, Ms Snoxall

Earlier this Term, Emma Smith, a Coordinator for Environment and Climate Change for Darwin City Council delivered a presentation to our Stage 1 Geography class. Emma and her team are tasked with the great responsibility of preparing Darwin for the changing climate patterns that are already happening on our planet. Due to its unique location, Darwin is more susceptible to rising temperatures than most Australian cities. In fact, Darwin City is the only council in the Northern Territory to declare a Climate Emergency since 2019.

A couple of weeks prior to this talk, Geographers went on an investigative fieldtrip to identify sustainable features and interventions in Darwin City. The presentation provided information from a different perspective, something that was not necessarily seen or noticed on the day on the ground. Emma, who is an engaging speaker with in-depth knowledge on mitigating changes in climate, provided students with greater insight into some more sustainable initiatives that have been already undertaken or are being planned by the council. Students then used this information in their fieldtrip reports.
