Darwin High Student sails on the Young Endeavour

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme has opened applications for young Australians aged 16-23 to join a voyage in the national sail training ship Young Endeavour. Darwin High School student Patrick Wiltshire shares his experience.

Sailing on the Young Endeavour had been something I wanted to do since my older brother Hamish sailed from Capetown to Fremantle in 2015. I got my chance early February joining the ship in Devonport, Tasmania spending ten nights aboard travelling across the Bass Strait to Adelaide. These waters provided some beautiful sailing and scenery including King Island, Portland and Backstairs Passage. The first few first nights of the trip were pretty challenging as we had to contend with winds above 40 knots and 5 m seas. Once we passed this portion I got the chance to learn some navigation and spent lots of time aloft. If you’re thinking about doing something different, then consider a trip on the Young Endeavour. I’d highly recommend it. You’ll enjoy it.
