DHS Debate Champions

Darwin High School (DHS) fielded three teams in the Northern Territory Debate Competition this year. Each of the teams participated admirably and enjoyed the competition whilst developing their skills in public speaking and argument. One of our teams, consisting of Samuel Roussos, Lachlan Anderson, Joel Keith and Diana Mukayeva, made the Grand Final.

In the Grand Final, they competed against Good Shepherd Lutheran College and the debate topic was “That we should use facial recognition technology to provide identity matching services”. The debate was closely fought and of an extremely high calibre. Samuel opened with an engaging, thorough and well-structured argument. Joel spoke second with a highly persuasive speech which enthusiastically pulled apart the opposing team’s arguments. Lachlan closed with his characteristic humour and systematic analysis of the debate. It was a tense wait for the adjudicators’ decision, which was split three to two in favour of Darwin High School. We congratulate Good Shephard Lutheran College for their outstanding performance leading to such a high quality debate. Samuel deserves a special mention as he was awarded best speaker in the debate. Thank you to the adjudicators, organisers, teachers and parents.
Sam, Lachlan and Joel came away NT Debating Champions after a tightly contested Grand Final.
This month Samuel and Joel are represented the Northern Territory at the National Debating Championships and were again outstanding.
