DHS Mooting 2022

By teacher Kira Goodsell
Each year Bond University’s Faculty of Law conducts a mooting competition involving student representatives from secondary schools around Australia.
Mooting is the oral presentation of a legal issue or problem against an opposing counsel and before a judge. It is perhaps the closest experience that a student can have to appearing in court and aims to develop their advocacy skills in a competitive environment.
The competition is fierce and requires students to prepare their cases carefully, and also think and act on their feet in the heat of the movement in the courtroom while following correct courtroom procedures and using all of their advocacy skills.
Year 12 student, Trudy Francis and Year 11 student, Eli Bacher make up the 2022 Darwin High School Mooting team. On 19 May, Trudy appeared as Senior Counsel for the Respondent alongside Eli as her Junior Counsel. They performed brilliantly and the judges made comment about the effectiveness of their delivery and their thoughtful responses to questions.
We are keenly waiting to hear whether they have made it into the final rounds!
