The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards is an annual poetry competition where students from primary right through to senior school are given a theme and asked to pen their thoughts. This year the theme was ‘Waiting’ and a number of Year 10 and Year 11 students from Darwin High School entered their poems.
From hundreds of entries, the judges awarded Darwin High School student Cindy Um’s poem, Thy Woeful Northern Territory, the status of Highly Commended. One of the judges commented that the poem was: “another great black comedy. I especially loved those lines about the T-shirts and thongs at the Governance Hall."
Cindy’s poem will be featured in the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards annual anthology and on the Dorothea Mackellar website http://keo-cms.appspot.com.storage.googleapis.com/sites/dorothea/assets/42583653-ac3c-431f-b790-bec583e86cc6.pdf
Congratulations Cindy!
