Earth and Environmental Science Litchfield Camp

By Science teacher, Ms Kirlew
Last term, two stage 1 Earth and Environmental Science classes went on an overnight camp to the Litchfield Environmental Centre as part of their course requirements. Upon arrival, students were straight into their first water quality testing activities. Armed with testing kits, they explored nearby streams and waterholes, measuring pH levels, turbidity, and other vital indicators of water health. It was awesome to see students engaged in scientific inquiry, collecting samples, and discussing the importance of clean water ecosystems. Through this hands-on experience, they gained a deeper understanding of the delicate balance that sustains aquatic life.
They identified various species, from freshwater prawns and water striders to even some spotting a freshwater crocodile. This camp highlighted the importance of biodiversity and the role each organism plays in maintaining ecological balance.
During their downtime students were able to have a swim, play cards, sing songs and hang out with their friends. As night fell, students took their torches to spotlight nocturnal animals such as spiders which looked particularly impressive.
Both classes would love to give a big thanks to the home economics department, particularly Ms Pike’s class that did the catering for the camp and Ms Johnston and Mr Howells that came along and supported Ms Gregory and Ms Kirlew’s EES classes. Thanks!
