From Chef to Firefighter - A SIEU Success Story

From Chef to Firefighter - A SIEU Success Story

By teacher Robyn Northcote

Haining Ye (29) is one of 12 recruit firefighters in Recruit Squad 45 and is now undertaking 17 weeks of intensive training.

Haining started at DHS in the Secondary Intensive English Unit in 2007 and completed his Year 12 in 2010. After leaving school, he completed a Certificate II in Hospitality whilst working in KFC as an assistant manager. At the end of 2011, he moved from Darwin to Katherine and worked with his family business as a chef for nine years.

In Katherine, Haining became more and more a part of the community and in 2015, he decided to become a volunteer firefighter. His strong work ethic was noticed and he was encouraged to apply to train and do this for a living. As a successful applicant, he is now involved in a heavy training schedule.

Haining is very excited about the direction his life is taking and is keen to serve and protect the community.

I always told myself, keep following your dreams and never give up.

He also had this advice

Students should have a strong mind set and when they want to give up, they should think about the reasons why they started on the journey in the first place.

We are very proud of him and wish him all the best.
