House of Representatives on Campus
On Thursday 8 June Darwin High School students received a visit from the Commonwealth Government’s Parliamentary Education Office, represented by Anne Kennedy and Mr Luke Gosling, OAM, MP.
Ms Schuman’s Year 10 Legal Studies class attended the session along with two Year 12 Politics students.
The session included a role-play scenario of the House of Representatives, where the students elected their leaders and chose a Parliamentary Speaker, Clerk and Sargent at Arms.
With the DHS House of Representatives now sitting, a bill was then introduced to the Parliament and opened for debate. In the end, even with the help of the Independents, the Opposition could not defeat it and so, the Bill was passed to the Senate.
To make the experience even more realistic, the Federal Member for Solomon, Mr Luke Gosling OAM also attended the session and sat on the Opposition side, joining in the debate with gusto. The students were then invited to ask the Member questions.
Darwin High School would like to thank Mrs Kennedy and Mr Luke Gosling, OAM, MP for such a fantastic educational experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
