Indigenous Students Work Experience

In Term 3, the Trainee-ship Program Manager from NEC Australia, contacted Darwin High School with an open invitation to our Indigenous students for a paid Work Experience program for students interested in IT. Three students, Tyrone Bright, Jorja Costello and Lily Kawai met with NEC and all three were then invited to work with NEC during the term break in October.

The Students were mainly based in the field and worked along-side mentors. All three showed great interest in their Work Experience. Both Lily and Tyrone have have discussed pathways for gaining a Certificate IV in IT Traineeship with NEC next year and have already returned to NEC for further Work Experience. Jorja is also considering returning for additional Work Experience during the school holidays, after she finishes her exams.

The staff at NEC were so impressed, they sent the School a letter praising the students’ and their contribution to the workplace. One mentor said that

Not once did I feel like I was working with school kids. They all conducted themselves fantastically in every situation, and their schools should be extremely proud of each and every one of them for representing their schools to such a high level. I personally would love to see them back in the office and watch their skills develop.
