Inspiring STEM+ Module 6: Constructing the Future with Robots and AI

Written by Year 11 student Anh Ho
When most people think of construction, they might picture cranes and concrete—not robots and artificial intelligence. But in Module 6 of the Inspiring STEM+ Program, participating students discovered how digital technologies, automation, and AI are rapidly transforming the construction industry.
Throughout the session, students explored how innovation is addressing the sector’s biggest challenges—from safety and skills shortages to communication and efficiency—while tying together the insights gained in previous modules.
Armed with an “unlimited budget” of craft supplies, the girls were challenged to design robot prototypes to meet specific construction-related needs. With hard hats on and blueprints in hand, the teams brought their bold ideas to life using cardboard, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, and a healthy dose of creativity and collaboration.
"The process was engaging. It was quite playful—we got to work with real engineers in constructing our own robots while getting familiar with construction work," said Kasfiha Tahsin.
"Working together to come up with something, then bringing everyone together and managing the team to accomplish the draft is an essential skill in real life to get any work done," added Simran Kandal.
"I definitely learned a lot about the importance of teamwork, communication and trust within the industry. The module also helped me improve my management, leadership and coordination skills. Despite some communication and time management issues, my group persevered—and we created the best robot, in my opinion!"
Another student chimed in with a laugh: "Although I disagree with Simran—I definitely made the best robot! The program was the highlight of the term, and I can’t wait for the next module!"
