Mooting Team make Finals

The Darwin High School Mooting Team will return to the Gold Coast for the Bond University National Senior School Mooting Competition Final this weekend.

Year 12 student Samuel Roussos and Tricia Ulep and Year 11 student Harvie Stiller-Wojkowski and finished the competition within the top 10 nationwide to qualify for the Final. Earlier this month the students travelled to Bond University to compete in the preliminary rounds against 104 other teams from 85 schools. This is the third year that Darwin High School has participated and the second time the school has been selected for the Finals.

The team have worked incredibly hard preparing during lunchtimes, after school and on weekends and will present their submissions to a panel of judges, where they will be asked a series of questions and challenged to provide clarifications.

The students with the help of their coach, Darwin High School teacher Kira Goodsell, dissected the mooting problem. The team did this before finding out whether we were respondent or appellant. This was central to the team’s understanding of the case. Students then spent a great deal of time reading and understanding the legislation that applied and the relevant authorities. Once they knew which side they would be arguing, they brainstormed approaches and arguments and over the course of a few weeks, put together their submissions.

The team has also been fortunate enough to have a number of lawyers from the Darwin community assist them during final rehearsals.
