NAIDOC Week 2025 at Darwin High
Last Friday, the Darwin High School community came together to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2025, recognising and honouring the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year marked the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC, a significant milestone celebrated under the theme The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy. The theme highlights the importance of empowering young leaders while acknowledging the strength and legacy of those who have paved the way.
The event began with a moving Acknowledgement of Country by Year 11 student Marlon Jauncey, followed by a powerful Smoking Ceremony delivered by Shannon Lee on the school oval.

Students and staff then shared in a BBQ lunch and were treated to an engaging cultural performance by the Mer Peribre Dance and Cultural Group. The celebrations continued into the afternoon with a series of fantastic activities coordinated by our Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies students, including:
- Basketball in The Tank with Hoops 4 Health
- A lively Staff vs Students AFL9s match — a huge thank you to AFLNT for umpiring! Despite a strong effort from staff, the students claimed a convincing 56–25 victory
- A hands-on weaving workshop and a collaborative NAIDOC mural project

We’d also like to thank everyone who purchased tickets for the NAIDOC Raffle — your support helps make these events possible and will directly contribute to our 2026 NAIDOC Week celebrations.
It was a meaningful and joyful day, showcasing our shared commitment to learning, respect, and cultural celebration.
