National Science and Engineering Challenge

National Science and Engineering Challenge

Last week Darwin High School played host to the Darwin round of the Science and Engineering Challenge. The event saw 260 Year 9 and 10 students from around Darwin and Palmerston compete in the nationwide competition.

This is the first time the school has hosted the competition, where teams competed in timed challenges ranging from the Helter Skelter Shelter earthquake resistant tower to Grasping at Straws, the hand made from pipe cleaners, string and drinking straws, and able to gesture and lift objects.

The day-long competition aims to attract young people to careers in science and engineering. Each team was battling for a place at the 25 October final in WA later this year.

The event activities engaged students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and tested their skills of resilience and collaboration. Each team produced a bridge, which was tested with a trolley and the winner being awarded to the design able to withstand the heaviest weight mass.

Overall points were awarded based on each team’s performance and the school with the highest point score at the end of the day is the winner. Congratulations to Darwin Middle School, who not only won the Challenge Day but also scored within the top three teams nationwide.

Congratulations to all the students who participated and thank you to the staff and community partners whose hard work and support ensured the events overwhelming success.
