Plain English Speaking Award 2016

Plain English Speaking Award 2016

On Saturday 4 June, the NT final of the Plain English Speaking Award was hosted by Darwin High School.

Entrants from St Phillip's College in Alice Springs, Casuarina Senior College and Darwin High were required to write, rehearse and deliver a six minute speech on a topic of their choice, participate in a three minute interview and finally deliver an impromptu speech of three minutes' duration.

This year the impromptu topic was "The first step is always the hardest." Students were given the topic just before their preparation time; they had four minutes to make notes and then three minutes to speak to their audience.

Darwin High School was ably represented by Sonya Fenton and Jack Davis, both current Year 12 students. Jack was awarded runner up and Sonya won first place. She will be representing the NT at the National Finals in Sydney in August. Both students worked very hard to confidently participate in this prestigious competition and we congratulate them on their courageous and successful efforts.
