Politics Excursion

Politics Excursion

On Thursday 16th September, the Stage 1 Politics class went on an excursion to Parliament House.

Students had the opportunity to sit in the Public Gallery to watch our politicians in action, had a tour of the backrooms and met the Chief Minister, Michael Gunner. The students asked Mr Gunner a lot of hard-hitting political questions and managed to find out that the coolest person he has ever met is Olivia Newton John.

Students then had a presentation from the Northern Territory Electoral Commission and learnt valuable information about the democratic elements of the Northern Territory’s Parliamentary and Electoral systems. It was fascinating to discover that in 1918 it took the majority of the Darwin population protesting and burning effigies for the Northern Territory to gain representation in Federal Parliament.
