Farewell and Reflection from Jill Hazeldine
Dear Darwin High School Community,
After much reflection, I have made the decision to retire from my position as Principal of Darwin High School at the end of this year, when my leave concludes. This was not an easy decision, and having the opportunity for an extended period of leave this year gave me the space to consider it carefully. I thank Joe Hewett for his leadership of the school this year.
Looking back on the past seven and a half years, I feel an immense sense of pride and gratitude. It has been a privilege to lead this exceptional school and to share in so many memorable moments — from the design and construction of the STEAM building and the refurbishment of the canteen, to navigating the challenges of COVID-19 and celebrating our 60th anniversary at Bullocky Point.
The true highlight, however, has been witnessing our students thrive — achieving their NTCET through diverse pathways, whether via vocational training, employment or university preparation. Seeing so many of our students make it to the Top NT graduates each year has also been a high point. Our school allows every student to find their passion and pursue excellence, and seeing that in action has been deeply rewarding.
Darwin High School is an extraordinary community. Its strength lies in its people — our remarkable students, supportive families, talented and dedicated staff, and our committed alumni and School Board. I could not have wished for a better team, and I thank our staff, families and board sincerely for their unwavering commitment to our students’ success. It is this commitment that has made my job a pleasure.
While I will miss the daily energy and connection of school life, I look forward to watching from the sidelines as Darwin High continues to grow and excel. Since its establishment in 1956, Darwin High School school has embraced many changes with resilience and pride, and I am confident it will continue to lead the way in excellence in public secondary education.
I will be remaining in Darwin for the foreseeable future and look forward to catching up with many of you around town.
With warm regards and heartfelt thanks,
Jill Hazeldine
Principal, Darwin High School
