Seniors Expo
On Friday 2 June some of Darwin High School's wonderful Secondary Intensive English Unit (SIEU) students volunteered at the Council for the Ageing, NT's Seniors Expo at the Museum and Art Gallery.
The Expo aims to promote health and wellbeing for senior citizens and the community activities available to them. Over fifty community groups, organisations and government agencies participated in the event.
This is the third year Darwin High School SIEU students have volunteered at the Expo and Darwin High School SIEU teacher Jenny Jenkinson said
Many of our SIEU students are in their first year of living in Australia, so participating in events like the Seniors Expo provides them with a great opportunity to be a part of the community and to practise their English outside of the classroom.
The students assist with everything from event set up to greeting the Seniors as they arrive and providing information on where to go and what is happening. Throughout the day students also escorted their senior guests through the expo and served them morning tea, lunch and refreshments.
Seniors Expo event Manager, Stephanie Kendall said
The students from the High School did a wonderful job once again at the Seniors EXPO serving the morning tea with a beautiful grace, respect and hospitality. We were so thrilled to have them participate in this very special community event and offer our heartfelt thanks to students and teachers alike.
