Year 11 Students Gain Valuable Road Safety Insights at Street Smart High

Last Thursday, 350 of our Year 11 students and 20 staff attended the Street Smart High road safety awareness event at the Darwin Convention Centre, joining students from across the Darwin region.
The event provided an eye-opening and informative experience, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from our students. A huge commendation to our Year 11s for their exceptional behaviour and respect throughout the excursion.
Street Smart High is an annual road safety education program designed to tackle the Northern Territoryโs alarming youth road trauma statistics. Through first-hand experiences, it educates students on their responsibilities as drivers and passengers while emphasizing the consequences of risky driving behaviors, including:
- Distracted driving
- Not wearing a seatbelt
- Speeding
- Drink and drug driving
- Driver fatigue
A Day of Learning and Real-Life Impact
Students took part in various activities designed to reinforce the importance of road safety:
๐ Witnessing a simulated crash scene with a pre-and-post crash analysis
๐ Hearing real-life stories from individuals impacted by road trauma
๐ Engaging with emergency services and industry experts committed to keeping young people safe
๐ Gaining practical road safety skills and knowledge
During the lunchtime break, students also had the opportunity to explore exhibition displays, collect information, and connect with organisations that offer services for young drivers.
Principal Joe Hewett said that
this was a really powerful day that held the full attention of 1300 teenagers for hours at a time. It had an impact on me and I can only imagine that every student would have taken important learning away from this event.
We are proud of our students for embracing this valuable learning experience, which will undoubtedly help them become safer and more responsible road users.
