The History of Mathematics

The History of Mathematics

Recently the Year 11 Centre for Excellence Mathematics Class had the opportunity to meet a prominent Mathematician, Mr Bill Shorter. Mr Shorter is also a former Mathematics teacher at Darwin High School. He delivered a distinctive lecture on the History of Mathematics; how the Sumerian, Egyptian, Greek and Indian number system was transformed to the current number system that plays a key role in our everyday life.

Mr Shorter also discussed the evolution of Algebra; one of the cornerstones of modern mathematics. In addition to learning the origins and alluring discoveries of mathematics, students were given interactive tasks to improve their aptitude on different axioms and theorems. It was an inventive and engaging session that expanded their knowledge on mathematics.
