A message from our School Counsellor, Ms Trembath
Returning to school after the term break can quickly bring back all the study worries that we tried to put to the side over the holidays (this applies to all of us- students and their families, teachers and school staff).
We can feel very stressed and soon become overwhelmed. Talking about stress is healthy. Having a conversation in your family or your faculty about stress is a good place to start. Talk about what makes your stressed, what helps keep your stress levels down, and agree to reach out to each other when you notice stress levels rising.
Using grounding techniques also helps to reduce stress by interrupting “worry” thinking. One method which is simple and effective is called the 5-4-3-2-1 technique. This method works because it engages multiple senses and requires us to focus on the present not on worrying thoughts. This interrupts the fight or flight response and calms our nervous system reducing symptoms of stress almost immediately.
