Last Thursday, Darwin High School Year 11 C4E and Specialist Mathematics students had the exciting opportunity to attend the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, where they visited international solar car teams and gained insight into the future of sustainable engineering.

The excursion allowed students to see first-hand how mathematics, physics, and teamwork combine to produce solar-powered vehicles capable of racing thousands of kilometres across the Australian outback. C4E teachers, Ms Shimokawa and Ms Tan highlighted what an enriching and rewarding experience this was for students.

Students met VTC Solar Car Team members from Hong Kong, who shared their experiences balancing competition pressure with teamwork. Team member Ho Kar Wan explained, “Most likely I just do the paperwork for the competition – around nine forms to fill in – but I also help the team when I can. It is teamwork, self-discipline, and passion that keep us going. Passion is most important, because everyone here loves the car and wants to make it better.”

The Adelaide University Lumen Solar Car Team also discussed the challenges of building a competitive car. “We have spent over a year designing and building this car. Many of us have pulled all-nighters in the workshop, sometimes sleeping on tables just to get it done,” one team member explained. Despite the long hours and limited resources, their determination was precise: “If we finish the race, it will be one heck of an achievement.”

Other international teams highlighted how the challenge teaches students to integrate different engineering fields. Professor Fukuda from Tokai University noted, “In the solar challenge, you do not just learn one area. You must integrate aerodynamics, electronics, and mechanics. It is teamwork and problem-solving at the highest level.”

For Darwin High’s C4E students, the day was inspiring. The excursion aligns with Darwin High’s commitment to engaging students with real-world STEM experiences. By meeting engineers from around the world, students gained technical insights and a sense of how passion and perseverance drive innovation.
