Welcome Back for 2022

Welcome Back for 2022

Welcome back everyone and Happy New Year to you all. As we enter now our third year of the pandemic, I want to acknowledge that there may be some of you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. I want to reassure you we have been working hard during the break, under guidance from the Department of Education to prepare for the return of the school year. Maintaining a safe learning environment continues to be our top priority.

School returns for students on Monday 31 January and all students are expected to attend school.

Parents/carers of students who are absent are asked to notify the school by phoning 8999 1222 or emailing [email protected] as soon as possible.

The first bell will go at 7.55am and Year 10 students are to go the Pavillion (next to the Tank) to receive their timetable. Students will then go to their Lesson 1 class for an online assembly

SIEU students are to go straight to the Exam Centre to receive their timetable.

Year 11 and Year 12 students are to go straight to their Lesson 1, Monday timetabled class – check Compass for your timetable.

Year 11 and Year 12 students who are new to the school are asked to go straight to the Front Office to receive their timetable and be shown around the school. Hard copy timetables will be available from the Front Office for students who are new to Darwin High School or who don’t have access to Compass. Please email [email protected] with your student name and Year Level to request a printed copy.

Darwin High School continues to do everything possible to maintain a safe environment and to reduce the spread of COVID-19. This will mean many of the operating guidelines put in place last year will remain for 2022. Students, teachers and staff are required to follow our COVID safety measures:

  • Wear a mask. Masks are mandatory for anyone over the age of 12. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing a mask, for those who catch the bus to school, we also stress the importance of wearing a mask on the bus at all times.
  • Mask exemptions and vulnerable students- if your child is exempt from wearing a mask or has a medical condition that makes them vulnerable, please contact the school to discuss how they can be supported.
  • Be alert for symptoms. Parents are asked to continue to be alert to their child/ren displaying COVID symptoms. If they are unwell, do not send them to school, seek medical advice and notify their absence from school. Students who are unwell at school will be sent to the sickbay, and will be isolated and parents will be phoned to come and collect them as a priority.
  • Notify the school. Please inform the school if your child/ren record a positive COVID test or if they are deemed a close contact.
  • BYO water bottle. The bubblers are available for drinking but students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school each day.
  • Hygiene habits. Wash hands as often as possible, particularly before/after eating and after going to the bathroom. Use the sanitiser available all around campus and cough/sneeze into a tissue or elbow. Each classroom will have hand sanitiser and disinfectant for wiping down surfaces after use.
  • Physically distance. Wherever possible students are asked to maintain 1.5 metres from each other.
  • Enhanced cleaning. We have an enhanced cleaning regime with additional cleaning of high touch surfaces, bathrooms and eating areas.
  • Notification of cases. We will notify you via Compass/email if your child is in a class with a student or staff member who tests positive. We will also provide the school community with regular updates and any changes to operations.

Canteen update

We are excited to announce the renovation of our school canteen is complete, looking fantastic and ready for the start of the new school year. There is an online ordering system through Compass and the canteen is now self-serve. This new process will speed up transactions and reduce the amount of time spent in line. Students are asked to observe the line markings and will need to wear a mask while the mask mandate remains in place.

We will provide the school community with regular updates and any changes to operations through Compass, the webpage and social media. If you have any questions about your child, please contact the school on 8999 1222.

We hope our students and teachers have a wonderful first day for 2022.

Kind Regards

Jill Hazeldine
